ParticipantThis Saturday the long awaited Wood Duck nesting boxes were put in place. Plan B was required since the thick PVC pipes had too much flex to keep the boxes steady in the wind. A quick trip to the nearby Ace Hardware resulted in galvanized fence posts that made for rigid replacements. With PVC collars in place to accommodate the base-plates installed on the boxes, final placement was easy. The poles were driven in at an angle to ease the Woodie chicks’ climb to the entrance/exit hole and the boxes were set facing the south-southeast for protection against prevailing storm winds. Check out the pictures of the process and the result. Stay tunes for hoped for critter cam pictures of Wood Ducks and their new broods. If you have any kind of wet-land on your property consider adding some nesting boxes there. It takes nothing bigger than a pot-hole pond and requires very little work to provide new nesting opportunities foe America’s most beautiful duck.
