Well sometimes you don’t know how much you miss a Friend until there not able to spend time with you anymore. My good Friend Joe has become very ill, we have hunted together for the past 25 years. He has spent many weekends with us in Hancock country teaching most of us how to Hunt! His ability as an Outdoorsman was amazing, He could shoot better than anyone I had ever met. Once he shot a running 8pt at about 60 Yards. I called him the Rifleman after that. His nick name at Deer Camp was CAMP MANAGER because he always showed up with something for our deer hunting property. He loved to go by garage sales an pick up things like silverware, or an old lamp paper towels you name it he would bring it. Mostly he would keep us in line an teach us things like how to gut a deer. He was what I called a real MAN, from the old school! I truly miss my Friend, an have prayed many times for him. I hope I can teach the younger men hunting with me an pass on this GREAT SPORT, like Joe did for Me!

Great memories of close outdoor friends are precious. We all gain from knowing companions like that. Read a story by the outdoor writer Nash Buckingham, “Hail and Farewell,” for a look at the importance of such people.

Make sure you tell him that I killed a deer out of his stand. I’m going to preserve that stand and hunt it more in the future. We can call it OLE Joe’s Stand.

Joe was a great hunting companion for sure. Would always give me pointers on shooting and hunting. Always seemed to see deer when everyone else saw nothing. In fact he hunted a stand called Death Valley and saw deer about every time he hunted it and I would hunt that same stand on numerous occasions and never saw a deer out of that stand. Go figure. Gave me a nice knife when I first started hunting that I still use today. My favorite story about him is he got down out of the stand early to help my dad pull a deer out of the woods and on the way back to camp, they drove down the road where you could see his stand and there was a deer standing under his tree. He told my dad to let him out of the car and then drive off slowly. That deer watched the car drive off and Joe ended up getting the deer! Sure miss having him down at deer camp.

I remember that Day very well! That’s one thing that can’t be taken away from us. The GREAT times we had hunting with Joe! Picture of Joe in 1997 see below!
