Like most owl encounters, I heard it long before I saw it. Not the rhythmic eight note call of the barred owl or the rasp of the screech owl. Four deep hoots, slow and loud, just at dusk. No sight of the caller, though. It took following the call for a hundred yards or so to pinpoint the big owl’s location. I spotted it on a pine limb, fifty or sixty feet high. At the angle the owl was at it could have been any big raptor but when it turned its head to face me the “horns” were clear against the darkening sky. Sure, the horned owl is not all that rare, even in suburbia, but it still makes me think of the wild places. Great bird and thankful to have been able to spend time watching and listening to a voice of the woods.

Went Turkey Hunting years ago sat down under a Big White Oak and had just settled in, all of a sudden a BIG Hoot from above Scared Me. Sounded like he was on top of Me, it’s amazing how LOUD they are when all is Quite!

No kidding! Quite a shock that must have been. By the way, did any toms gobble in response? We use barred owl calls, crow calls, etc. to get a tom to “shock gobble,” I would think the big owl’s hoot would be even more effective. Would really like to hear more about your hunt. With deer season winding down, its time to think about turkey season – March is just down the road.

Sorry for the Delay, didn’t check my post. The hunt was petty much uneventful when that BIG OWL bellowed I Didn’t here any Goblin and I Knew that wasn’t a Good Sign. It was a BEAUTIFUL Morning in the Woods and I did some Antler hunting on the way out actually found a spike Horn so it turned out Ok. You know what They Say any day in the Woods beats Working anytime!

Amen. Back in the workforce on a part-time basis and though it adds to the kitty (buying a SxS percussion shotgun with the extra revenue) it puts a crimp in time afield. Still got til the middle of January for deer and til the end of February for the little critters. Gonna put some meat on the table sooner or later.

I hopefully will be back in the Woods after Christmas, got a little Vacation time Left. I want to do some last minute Deer hunting and Small Game Hunting also.
