BFMHUNT
ParticipantHad a really great weekend! Headed out Friday around lunch to get to camp and got down about 2:00PM. Still bow season so I suited up and hunted my back stand. About an hour before dark, I saw movement to my left and there were three deer about 100 yards out that were skirting me. Looked like does, but never really got a great look at them and too far for the bow. That was all that was seen that day.
Saturday morning I hunted my buddy’s stand where I had seen great bucks on camera. At 7:30, saw movement to my right and had a deer cross near the big pond, but moving the whole time. Looked and moved like a buck but no shot. Hour later, had a buck run by full speed to the left, saw he was wide but he never stopped and was gone. Hour after that had another buck pop out behind me to the right. Saw he had tall tines, but he too was moving fast and broke out into a run, no time to scope and see if legal. That was all I saw that morning.
Saturday afternoon, I had my buddy Tony come down to hunt. I put him in the stand I was in that morning and I headed to my stand in the back. No deer seen by either of us that afternoon, except I got down too soon I guess, as I had does blow at me walking out as they were walking in.
Sunday morning, I got back in my stand and Tony hunted the same stand he had been in. Weather was about 55 degrees, misting, and overcast, beautiful morning. About 7:00Am I got a text from Tony that he had a buck in front of him, but too small and he was headed toward me. About the time I got the text I saw him out front. Put the scope on him, but could tell he was too small. All of sudden he ran to the back line in full sprint and down the back road to the corner. About 30 minutes after, i saw another deer running full sprint along the back road, couldn’t tell what it was. About 30 minutes after that, had a doe come in but behind me to the right. I did not have a shot through the brush. All of sudden it ran off instead of continuing on its path. About 30 minutes later, I’m watching to the left, hear something to the right and there is a popup deer about 60 yards out. Can tell it has horns but I can only see the profile. It starts to come left down in front of me at a medium pace. I start to get glimpses that it may be wide, but still not sure (Texas has to be 13″ inside). It gets about 50 years out in front of me and stops behind a tree. I pop the scope up and it moves out and I check the left tine. It’s 2″ outside the ears, looks good and I decided at that point, it was time. I dropped the cross hairs behind the front leg and fire. To my amazement the deer has not moved. For a second I think I have missed, but perhaps not. I slowly rebolt a round and he still doesn’t move. I put the cross hairs on again and fire. This time he ran out of my view towards the north line. I didn’t hear him run or crash, hoping I made the good shot. I waited about 20 minutes and got down to go take a look. As I start walking towards, I see something white laying through the brush, I think it’s him! Walk a little further and start seeing first blood, its good. Follow a little further but I am now able to see he’s down. I get up to him and check him and pull his antlers and he is a 9-point! I am a little worried on the width though as we need to be 13″ but after I look him over I am confident he is 13″. Turned out to be 14.5″! An awesome hunt and this was my first Texas Buck! I’ll never forget it. It was very cool to have my buddy Tony down there to help me bring it in from the woods. He has never hunted before except for birds when he was a kid, so I may have ruined him! God is Great!
