It’s a great pleasure to write and finally say that i have bagged my first buck. This beauty was taken on Saturday 11/5/16 around 9.30am. It was a beautiful morning, and such a thrilling hunt. I hunted the ” Ole Ridge Stand” where to this day, i’ve killed 3 out of my 4 deer. Around 8.30am, the deer started to arrive for their feast on the thousands of acorns that were falling. I saw a button head, a small doe, than 20-30 minutes later a 5 point came by. Nice size deer, but after zooming in with my scope, i was able to determine this was not a legal deer. These three deer hung around for a little bit, and had no idea that i was around. It was so unique to watch nature at it’s finest.

Then another deer came out, and it stuck around for the duration of my hunt. When it got closer, i determined it was a female, and it ended up being a really nice size doe. I was very tempted to take this one, but being that it was so early in the day, and being that i already had this much action, i decided to wait and see if anything else might come by. After around 15 minutes of watching this doe, i noticed a large bodied doe that moved in the distance on my right side. At this point, i didnt know what it was, but i knew it was big. The major challenge of this hunt, was all the deer came from my right, including the deer that i eventually harvested. I’ve hunted this stand multiple times, and every time i see a deer it always comes in front of me, to the left, or behind me. So needless to say, i positioned myself accordingly, and with these deer coming in from the right, i slowly and surely had to reposition my body so i could get a better look, and to have a chance of getting a shot. This stand is an ole wooden ladder stand and needless to say it can be a little squeaky if you move. At this point, i was solely determined on getting a good look at this bigger deer in the distance, but it was going to be very hard to do so given that there was a doe within 15-20 feet from my stand that could have easily busted me. The Doe finally turned the other way to enjoy an ACRON, where, i made as swift as a move as i could to turn my body and legs around the stand so i could focus on getting a a right sided shot. At this point, my legs are hanging off the stand, and i used the tree as an anchor for the gun. Now that i was in a better position, my next challenge was to find that large bodied deer, all while staying completely still so the doe didn’t bust me. I had my scope on the lowest level and spent about 10 minutes looking through the brush to try and find him. Finally, he moved out from the brush, and i was able to identify that he had horns. I zoomed in, and counted 7. He was roughly 70-75 Yards out. My heart was shaking. I still didnt have a great shot at him, but i picked the spot that i hoped he’d walk into. I put my crosshairs right outside of the tree that he was behind, and i said a quick prayer. I asked god to please give me a steady hand, and if i were to pull the trigger i asked him to bless my deer by letting it fall quickly. About 2 minutes later, he walked directly out in front of the tree and i pulled the trigger using my trusted lever action 30.30 with a Leopold Scope. BANG!!! The buck jumped in the air, and both him and the doe ran up the hill and then they both cut to the right. Once they turned right down the road, roughly 15 yards, the doe kept going, and the buck fell to the ground. All of this was in my sight. I saw the bucks last breath, and knew i had officially put my first buck down.

I was so giddy, i almost yelled in happiness but i constrained myself in respect for any of the other hunters that might have been in the woods, but i was so pumped up. I got out of the stand, walked to my stand, and got my first glimpse. This wasnt a huge trophy buck that you see on T.V, and it wont be the biggest buck i ever kill, but it was my first buck, and it was a beautiful one at that. Nice 7 point, with thick, good color horns. By far the biggest deer, i’ve ever put to the ground! I texted my hunting partner/Mentor Richard Morris, and i then called my Girlfriend to let her know that we were not going to go hungry this winter! After seeing nothing at all during the opening weekend, it was an absolute blessing to have this opportunity!

Before i saw this buck, i was so close to taking the doe just to put some meat in the freezer, but i can dedicate this lesson to Mr. Richard Morris… Let the doe walk, and ” their Just might be a buck behind it”. Sure enough, there was, and it just so happened to be my first buck. I took the cape to the taxidermist yesterday and told him it was my first buck. He opened the bag, and said ” man, you got a pretty dang deer for your first buck! I couldn’t even sleep last night i was so excited!

To close this one out, i just wanted to say a special thank you to Brian Morris, and Richard Morris. Brian is my brother who introduced me to the sport, and Richard is his father who i call my “Deer father”. I am so grateful that Brian convinced me to give hunting a try, and that Richard let me be apart of the deer family at ” the BUs”. I’ll continue to learn and grow as a hunter thanks to these two good folks.

Now… It’s time to put the gun away, and focus on tagging out by getting my first bow kill!

      WHAT A GREAT HUNT!
