ParticipantI don’t know if you keep a journal of your extravaganzas or as we often do today, a video journal. Not sure why but it is a good thing because when I get all mushy and reminiscent I find myself dusting off a manuscript, pouring myself a mazoltoff, cuddling up in a cozy armchair by the fireplace and thumbing through the material.
THURSDAY AUGUST 16TH 2011 – I’m not exactly sure but I’m usually wide awake at three AM. I’ve grown accustomed to this kinky behaviour of mine and I rehearse the Gloria and say a prayer for an unknown person who is in need. Gradually sleep takes over and I’m out for the rest of the night. But on this occasion, I could hear in the distance a faint rumbling and could see dull flashes through the screen door. I knew from the advance winds that I would soon be engulfed in a thunderstorm of enormous proportions. In split time the storm was over the top of me and unleashed all its fury. The crack of lighting seemingly, right above my head, exploded into a tremendous boom and furious clash. I jokingly cried out, “I’m awake Lord!” The winds increased and howled significantly, the thunder boomed like a cannon and the rain pounded my Alaknak. The skies lit up like an x-ray machine. I didn’t occur to me to close the flaps as there is a protective canopy though I jumped to my feet to close the open windows. The storm eventually moved on to another location, but the rains stayed to dance on the forest floor. All was quiet again except for the droplets of water falling off the drenched leaves. There was a warm faint light shadowing on the walls and I realized that it was my kerosene lantern, still aglow and not extinguished by the rains and wind. With that reassurance – I was out like a light.

ParticipantHi BIG Jim – I keep book and camera ready. I usually jot down themes and thoughts without detail. Later, back at base camp, I fill in the spaces and when I get home I re-do the material so it makes sense to me later.
