I was sitting in my stand on Sunday morning of opening weekend of rifle season. It was about 11:15am and I was going to climb down at about 11:30 to go get some lunch. I’m sitting in a stand we call the Sendaro, which means “long road” in Spanish. The stand is on the corner of this little bend in the road which we have planted with oats and peas. From one side I can see all the way up the road out to about 400 yards. From the other side I can see straight into our food plot that is decent sized, about 15,000 sq ft. Well I start putting stuff away and getting packed up and I just happened to look out towards the large food plot and this dude was just standing there, out in the open, in the middle of the day about 80 yards away just munching away on some oats. I slowly pull my rifle up, get set, and calm to make a good shot. I go to pull the trigger and the trigger is locked. Panic sets in…lol. As calmly and quietly as possible I eject the shell into my hand and quietly reload. I’m so rattled that I get set to shoot again and forgot to turn the safety off. Finally, I’m ready to shoot. I take a deep breath, get set and slowly squeeze the trigger. I made a great shot and he rain in a circle for about 30 yards and died right where I shot him! He was a good deer. Weighed 210lbs and was a 9 pointer that would’ve had a cool little drop tine had he not broke it off. His browtines were broke as well. I had several pictures of him but they were all at night. It was a great opening weekend!

Great deer and a great story about staying calm under pressure. Solving technical difficulties with a good buck just standing there takes a lot of concentration. Sounds like you hunt country where really long shots are possible. In the thick stuff around here even seeing a deer at over 100 yards is a rare occurrence. Glad your buck was up close.

D-Mo, I hunt in a little town named Midville. Its between Augusta and Savannah in Southeast Ga. We’ve had this land for over 30 years. I grew up on this property. We do have several stands where long shots are possible. We have several powerlines on the property that we plant every year. We also have some really thick woods and swampy areas. I bowhunt in that thick stuff.

Congrats! that’s a good looking deer. The rewards of staying late in the stand. Way to keep calm with the equipment and get the job done.
